A HOPE VI grant to replace dilapidated public housing provided the opportunity for the Seattle Housing Authority to create a vibrant mixed-use and mixed-income neighborhood around SOUND Transit's Othello Station Light Rail stop. The master plan extends the existing street grid south into the 36 acre former public housing site and north to organize a miscellany of existing uses and vacant land. The centerpiece is a new 1,000 ft. long public park, providing a connection between residences and neighborhood shopping, services and transit. The approximately 400 new housing units vary in type and density; from single family houses to apartments-over-retail and a community clinic.

Daniel Solomon Design Partners prepared the master plan and served as architects for the 219 units of public and affordable rental housing surrounding the public park. This established a high design standard and a strong sense of place at the initial phase, setting the stage for successful market rate housing and commercial development.
